Numismatic value of '43 steel pennies

Would any of you more numismatically-inclined GIMers be able to give me an approximate value of a '43 steel cent that is in quite good shape. I found several of these babies in a box of pennies recently, and was surprised at how well preseved they were for circulated coins.

Thanks!

Weigh the steel and compare to today's going rate.

Unless you mean 'collector' value?

They are worth about 12 to 15 cents each in ciruclated condition, and as much as 50 cents or more if Uncirculated.

They really aren't worth a lot. Bad/average ones go for 5 cents at my coin store. Perfect ones might be a buck.

Steel pennies although very interesting and nice to look at are actually not that rare. They were minted in steel during 1943 in an effort to save copper for the war. Now for a penny this is not bad, circulated they may fetch .05 to .20 cents which is a whopping 20 x FACE!!!

The REAL MONEY is in a RARE 1943 COPPER penny!

If you have an uncirculated steel cent it could fetch up to 5 -7 dollars.
Keep in mind they were over 1 billion of these produced.

I started a thread on these in Base Metals Sub

Steel cent and some odd quarter

1943 was perhaps the most serious year of WW2 for the U.S. Copper was needed in huge quantities to make bullet jackets and shell casings, so the Mint was asked to strike cents in a substitute metal in order to divert as much copper as possible to making ammunition. The Mint finally decided on using scrap steel coated with zinc to prevent corrosion. However the coins had problems from the start. When new they were easily confused with dimes. After a while the zinc coating turned an ugly gray, and as it started to wear off the underlying steel rusted. By 1944 enough extra copper was available that the steel coins could be discontinued; cents from that year and 1945 were struck from recycled ammo shells so these are often called "shell casing cents".

Thanks for the responses. I didn't realize that they minted over a billion of these, which certainly explains the lack of numismatic value. I will, however, keep my eyes out for a '43 copper penny!

In the RARE business of badges and guns - I soon discovered that ONCE something is RARE enough "some JERK" decides to copy it.

I've seen rare Colt Peacemakers copied in the first generation the second generation - and some very rare badges copied. KEEP in mind that these are in thr THOUSANDs of US dollar ranges plus.

SO...........................

Moral of the story is if something is rare - have an EXPERT certify it as really rare. I've seen a lot of phonies out there and they aren't all in the White House from time to time. :thumb.aspx::111::111:

On that though are WE not the MOST fortunate of people RECENTLY in the USA.

Because of the timing of the lastest financial situation - from last July 2008 to right now August 2009?

Right now 22% are REPUBLICANS

32% are DEMOCRATS

and hold your HATS 40% are LIBERTARIANS

because Bush II screwed up for last 8 months; Obama screwed up for the last 6 months; and we as Americans can figure out they are all screwing U.S.
(pun intended).

So we can't trust the two major parties - we'll turn to the ONE that respects the US Constitution and the BILL of RIGHTS - the LIBERTARIANS.

There's HOPE down the road - but remember like Washington told Frenchman Lafaete: "we can't expect to go from injustice and tyranny overnight on a featherbed!"

(above paraphased from Richard Maybury's Early Warnings Report - really good to have!)

So be of good cheer and keep praying for our country

THE united STATES for AMERICA!

If those coins are the correct composition and without the word "Replica" on it, that would be like ...:36_1_25::fan::censored:
